One day Geppetto, the woodcarver began making a wooden puppet. As he made the eyes, the eyes started to wink at him. When the face was finished the tongue started to protrude and mock him. When the puppet was complete, he ran away. Geppetto named him Pinocchio and treated him as his son.
A talking cricket on the wall warned Pinocchio to be good or he would get into trouble. But Pinocchio loved fun and mischief. So he threw a wooden hammer at the cricket. Gepetto put Pinocchio in school, sold his coat and bought him a spelling book. But on the way to school he saw a marionette show, sold his spelling book, purchased the ticket and took his seat. The marionettes, seeing the puppet called to him and he jumped out of his seat on to the stage.
The owner of the show was angry for the disturbance caused, but on hearing Pinocchio’s story, felt sorry for him and gave him five gold coins to buy back the book. Pinocchio promised to go to school and went his way. On the way he met a fox and a cat who
pretended to be lame and blind. Knowing Pinocchio had money they invited him for dinner in an inn and stay overnight. Night they got out and dressed as robbers hid in the forest. When Pinocchio came, they hung him up on a tree and tried to open his mouth
where he’d put the money. He clenched his teeth tight and would not let them take it.
Pinocchio’s guardian angel sent her dog and rescued him and had him brought to her home. But he would not tell her the truth. Whenever he told a lie his nose became long. It became very long. He was frightened and told the truth and his nose became
normal.
Once again Pinocchio met the fox and the cat. They advised him to bury the gold coins so that they’d grow into money trees. They dug up the money in the night and ran away. Sadly Pinocchio walked towards his home. On the way some mischievous boys
promised to take him to a Happy Land where they didn’t need to go to school but have fun the whole day long.
Pinocchio enjoyed himself tremendously for a few weeks. Then he grew ears and started to bray. He became a donkey! He was sold to a circus but since he became sick he was thrown into the sea. Fish ate up all his donkey skin and Pinocchio was out. But he
was swallowed by a whale. He saw a flickering candle inside the whale’s belly. Oh! It was Gepetto! He had gone in a boat in search of Pinocchio and got swallowed by the whale. When the whale was snoring they both escaped and reached home safe. Pinocchio
had learnt his lesson. He became a good boy, studied and took care of Gepetto. When he became good, the fairy turned him into a real boy. He was no more a puppet!
