When Gopal was born, his parents were shocked to find both his lower limbs undeveloped. They cried very much. But they decided to bring up the child with much care and love. Gopal grew up to be a beautiful intelligent child. His father would take him in his cycle to the school and carry him to his seat. He would keenly listen to the teacher. He would watch the children play in the ground and wave his hands. Sometimes some cruel children would make fun of him and laugh. Tears would well up in his eyes. He would tell his parents all that happened in school. His parents would encourage him not to give in to self-pity but to study well.
Opposite his house was Ranjan. He was afflicted with polio at the tender age of five. Children at school called him a lame fellow and made fun of him. So he refused to go to school. He pitied himself and cried. As he grew up he had to be sitting all the time at home. So his parents set up a petty shop for him.
Gopal studied well and passed IAS. He was made a Collector and given a special car that he could drive and a special wheel- chair. He never forgot his friend Ranjan. He always stopped in his petty shop for a chat. A documentary about Gopal’s success in
life was screened in the TV. Ranjan saw it and felt sorry for his life.
Whatever handicap you may have in life can be overcome by hard work and perseverance. Never give up on life.
