An old man used to sit at the entrance of a town. New people coming to the town used to ask him, “Are this town’s people good or bad?” The old man would ask them, “How are the people in your village? Are they good or bad?” If the answer is, “Our people
are good,” the old man would say, “This village people are very good, you can safely go in. They will treat you very well.” If the answer is, “Our village people are very bad,” the old man would say, “People of this town are very bad. I am afraid you may be treated shabbily.”
A man observing this asked the old man, “Why is it you are giving such answers?” The old man replied, “If you are good, people will be good to you. If you are bad, people will treat you badly.”
Be good, if you want to be treated well by others.
