A dry-fish vendor went to the market with a basket of his goods. After selling all his wares he was returning home which was five kilometers away. On the way there was a heavy downpour. It was getting dark and the man could not proceed on his way.
Luckily for him, a kindly gentleman seeing his plight, offered to accommodate him for the night. He was served a hot meal and the vendor went to sleep. His host was a vendor of jasmine flowers and his house was loaded with baskets of jasmine buds that started opening up in the night, filling the house with their aroma.
In the morning the host asked the dryfish vendor how he slept. The vendor replied that he could not sleep the whole night because the house was filled with a foul smell!
Having got used to the smell of dry fish, the scent of jasmine was obnoxious to him. So it is for chronic sinners. They get so used to the life of filth and sin that God’s things are hateful to them.
