Action or Reaction?

Reading: John 4:7-21

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,

it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking,

it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes,

always perseveres” (1 Cor 13:4-7)

We walk into the world every day and get hurt every hour. Your father makes an unreal demand on you or your mother misunder-stands you. A negative remark about your cooking or housekeeping or appearance irks you or a disobedient child tramples on your nerves. They all test our spiritual strength. Every day we face so many situations that hurt us. There are two ways to respond to any irritating situation, either you can act or react.

You can react by pulling a long face, refusing to talk, shouting, walking away, getting angry, fighting, putting down the one who hurt you, challenging her, criticising her or accusing her. There is another way of dealing with hurts. It is by action. If there is a fault on your side you can admit it and correct yourself and apologize. If not, instead of becoming critical you can become a model. If someone has hurt you, see them with eyes of love; let the weakness of others evoke a response of compassion in you. Instead of blaming them or accusing them, you can be a model of equanimity for them to emulate. That way, you do not become part of the problem, rather you become a part of the solution.

Do you think the Proverbs 31 lady had no problems? She had a mother-in-law, husband, children, servants, the poor coming to her house, business partners, vineyard workers to deal with, shopkeepers from whom she purchased and customers to whom she sold and neighbours. The success of her life can be credited to her proactivity. By that I mean, she did not spend her time and energy in reacting to all the irking problems of life but channelizing her time and strength in the positive and creative direction.

Love does not do certain things which we should not do. On the other hand love positively does some things which we should practise and make them our second nature. Go back to the quotation and read what not to do and what to do. We don’t change people by criticizing them but by being a model to them. It is so much easier to change us than to change others. Start today, start working on yourself.
