“I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord’ ” (Psa 122:1)
For David the Church was God’s house and his heart jumped with joy at the thought of going to his God’s house. Sadly today for many the Church has become a lurch — a difficult or un-comfortable place to be seated. Many go to give attendance. Church-going is an important Christian discipline we should adhere to.
Whether the singing or sermon or fellowship is good or not, we go there to worship God. Sunday (or in some places other days) is not for our work. The heart-broken young widow Anna found church a place of solace (Lk 2:36-38). Jesus found a very unusual person in the synagogue. A hunch-backed woman whocould not straighten up for eighteen years! All these years she found no healing. Yet with all her physical disability she was there to worship God (Lk 13:10-17). We have no excuse to give.
“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Heb 10:25,26). Neglecting church started even during Bible days. Now we are much closer to the ‘Day’ than ever. Whatever difficulty we may face on Sunday morning, let us pull ourselves together and go to church.
Do not be analysing how the worship is but transport yourself to the presence of the Lord and be worshipping the Lord along with others. Do not criticize the sermon but pray for the pastor and preacher. Sing with enthusiasm and don’t allow your mind to scatter during intercession time. Take an offering to the Lord. Do not go emptyhanded. Honour the Lord with your gifts whenever you experience a blessing; take a thankoffering. After the Service, meet people and show your love. Be genuine in fellowship.
The bent woman received a reward for attending church. Whether we like it or not, if we make church-going a discipline, without our knowledge, we will be edified and grow in our spiritual life. Our children will develop the discipline and grow in Christ. The Bible does not teach us unnecessary disciplines. If the Bible says it, we must obey it without questioning the validity of it. Freelancers are in the danger of becoming wandering sheep if they are not under pastoral care. So, decide today to make it a point to keep Sunday mornings for Church.
