Serving all the time

Reading: Luke 1:5-7,23-25

Women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers

but temperate and trustworthy in everything” (1 Tim 3:11)

The above verse speaks about the wives of servants of God. When a woman marries a man serving God, she dreams about ministry, not about cooking or childbirth. Pastors’ wives face certain specific problems like Zipporah (Num 12) —

People’s expectation about her is unrealistic. They expect her to be an angel. They compare her constantly with her husband. She is treated as if she belongs to a lower grade. If the husband goes wrong, people think she must be the cause. Quit worrying. Be natural, God keeps your cooking on one side and his sermon on the other side of the balance. Do your part well.

Loneliness is another problem. People come to you with their burdens. To whom will you go with your burdens? You struggle with the children when he is busy attending meetings. Have a good circle of friends and a trustworthy elderly lady as your counselor.

If overloaded, have a helper at home. If possible don’t take up a job. You have too many responsibilities. Do them joyfully.

You may have to penny pinch. Don’t compare yourself with others and don’t murmur like the Israelites. Contentment is the secret. Manage your income carefully. Give to the poor and save for the future. Be mindful of your spiritual blessings.

Learn to keep confidential matters of ministry so your husband can freely ventilate himself to you. Be a good companion and listener. Don’t be too quick to correct but give helpful suggestions.

Don’t deny yourself the small pleasures of life. If Sunday is a hectic day, relax on Monday. Don’t feel guilty to go to the park, circus, picnic, bicycling, outing, exhibition or an evening walk. Your children need them. Be jolly.

Loneliness, boredom, husband’s negligence, etc. may shove you into the arms of a man showing sympathy and appreciation. Beware. Too many have fallen into the trap.

Your husband is also very vulnerable to sexual temptation. Don’t be oversuspicious. Suspicion is a good watchdog; but if it becomes rabid, it can kill you. Be alert, be strong, be wise. Satisfy your husband and be pleasant in bed.

People expect perfection in your children too. Don’t beat them black and blue. Let children be children. Do not neglect them because of over-committed schedules. Give them a normal life.

Be involved in some ministry to keep you alive and bubbling.
