Fear of Husband
Reading: 1 Peter 3:1-6
“The fear of man will prove to be a snare,
but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” (Prov 29:25)
The Bible tells wives to submit to and respect their husbands, not fear them. If you fear God and want the best for your family, you will not be afraid of your husbands. It is true, many husbands behave like terrorists, keeping their wives under their thumb. But gradually a wife must pick up courage to speak up, cross question, confront, or even challenge their husbands when it is the wise thing to do.
If Abigail had feared her husband she wouldn’t have had the guts to meet David without her husband’s knowledge. I am sure, with much prayer, she told him about that at the right time. He became like a lamb because God acted on behalf of her. “For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear” (1 Pet 3:5,6).
Why is the apostle speaking about fear here? It is because, many times when it comes to doing what is right, but it is something that the husband doesn’t like, and the situation critical, she is gripped with fear. Abigail was not crying and wringing her hands. If she had sought permission from her husband to go and meet David, submissively, he would have been enraged. No doubt there was fear in her heart. But prayerfully she had to overcome that fear and do what was right, to save the family (1 Sam 25).
You need to fear only when you do wrong. So then you need clarity in your mind whether what you plan to do is right or wrong. “Do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” (Eph 5:17). You can consult one or two spiritual elders and make sure of doing the right thing. Then you have to proceed prayerfully, courageously, wisely.
Then you have to face the consequences. The righteous are as bold as the lion (Prov 28:1). Sarah was bold, Hannah was bold, Deborah was bold, Esther was bold, Mary and Mary Magdalene were bold. Learn from them. If you have done the right thing, why fear? You also need to teach young wives to be submissive, respectful and bold to their husbands.
