Madam Wisdom
Reading: James 1:5-7
“The wise woman builds her house” (Prov 14:1)
Not just her house, it means her life. So where do we get wisdom? Job asks, “Where can wisdom be found?” and gives the answer, “Behold, the fear of the Lord — that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:12,28). When a woman starts fearing God, she is in the path of wisdom. How does she walk this path? Very easy. God has given us His word. “Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people’” (Dt 4:5,6).
If Eve had gone by the word of God we’d be in paradise today. If Lot’s wife had listened to the instruction of the angels, what a lovely family she’d have had. If Sapphira had lived by the teaching of the apostles, death would not have overtaken her. God gave wisdom to Solomon but since he could not abide by the word of God, he became foolish.
Today many women do not read the Bible. If they read, they do not meditate it. If they meditate it, they do not apply it to their lives. That’s why many are foolish. “The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple” (Psa 19:7). Ezra had the wisdom of God in his hand (Ezra 7:25 KJV). How wonderful! We too have the wisdom of God in our hand in the form of printed pages. Yet, many times we choose our own foolish ways.
Women are advised propriety or wisdom (1 Tim 2:9,15; 3:11). “God has ... given us a spirit of sound mind” (2 Tim 1:7). This sound mind is what we need. Getting wisdom or learning to fear God and walk in His ways is not a one day process. It is a lifelong slow and steady growth.
Do not get discouraged. The devil will not discourage you from reading the Bible, not even from meditating it. But when it comes to putting the Word of God to practice, he will fight tooth and nail. If you want wisdom, you need to put on the whole armour of God and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Eph 6:11-17).
Daily pray for wisdom and the grace to walk by the Word of God. Never sidetrack to the right or left of God’s Word. God who gives wisdom generously will make you Madam Wisdom (Js 1:5).
