Silence is not always golden; it can explode as a bomb and destroy lives. Take the example of Sapphira. She passively accepted Ananias’ suggestion that they keep back part of the price of the land they sold. She told the lie to Peter which her husband had taught her. She was fully aware of her husband’s scheme, yet never raised her voice against it. The result? Both of them perished. If Sapphira had told her husband, “Why do you want to cheat giving a false impression that that was the price of the land?” she would have saved both of them or at least herself (Acts 5:1-10).
Esther was a very sensible and quiet girl, yet bold enough to speak up when necessary. When her race was at peril, she risked her life to speak to the king. God honoured her by saving her race (Esth 4:16).
Women should know when to be silent and when to speak up. Young girls are sometimes too submissive. They marry unbelievers even though they themselves may be believers. Many are afraid to speak to their parents. Like Rebekah you must have the courage to express your wishes to your parents, listen to their counsel and decide what is best for your life (Gen 24:58).
Many young girls forego their rightful property because they first of all do not know what share of the property belongs to them and secondly that legally they can claim their property (Num 27:1- 4). They should not go to the court against their parents but ask their parents about the property, if there is any, and request them to equally divide it between the children without partiality, whether boys or girls. Do not fight for your property. But be wise. If your parents understand and give you what is due to you, good. If not, do not hate them or fight with them. Bless them and continue to love them. God will bless you indeed.
Women must break the tradition of silence that shackles their lives in India. Sarah obeyed Abraham calling him Lord. But in the matter of Ishmael she spoke up. When it hurt Abraham she put her foot down and God approved it. What future significance it had! (Gen 21:10; Gal 4:28-30).
Why is there a hand over your mouth? Whose hand is that? Who is keeping you from speaking? You will be stunned to realize you have “your” hand over your mouth. You have silenced yourself!
