A woman is under her parents before marriage, under her husband after her marriage, and under her son or daughter when widowed. She is always tethered to some relationship.
God said, “You are free...” (Gen 2:16). What did that mean? Was Eve free to do whatever she wanted? The announcement was followed by a “but.” A condition was imposed upon the freedom. Then was it freedom? She was to learn after a bitter experience that true liberty is one with restrictions.
A kite is free to fly only when it is a slave to the string. Cut the string and its freedom to fly is gone. Girls will find life miserable under parents. They feel they have no freedom. They think they are restricted too much. I have gone through that stage. Many times I cried, wept and even threw temper tantrum. My parents were very understanding but never once relaxed the rules. Oh, how I thank God for my parents whose wise grip on me put me on the road to life. They prevented me from destroying myself.
God will never rob us of our free will. He will give us the freedom and write the “but” in bold letters. It is up to us to understand the “but” and save ourselves. Poor Eve! She misunderstood God, the way we misunderstand our parents or husband or children. Hagar ran away. But Sarah was bound but free. God gave Eve freedom to eat from any tree in the garden then drew a circle around her. “But you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil” (Gen 2:17). She was safe, as long as she enjoyed her freedom within the circle. But she dared to step out — and bham! Her world fell apart! She found herself cringing, wishing she had not abused her freedom. “Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves” (1 Pet 2:16).
A woman will always find restrictions in her life. Count them as blessing. Someone said, “Some see the rules of marriage as a prison; others — the happy ones — see them as boundary lines that enclose all the things they hold dear.”
