Sheba revolted against Davi d and was in the process of establishing himself as king over Israel. He met people everywhere and stole their hearts. He was gathering a following for himself. The Israelites rejected David who saved them from their enemies and gave them a good life. So he sent Joab with his army to kill Sheba who was in the city, Abel. But a wise woman in Abel thought about a solution. Why should a city be destroyed for the sake of one man? She talked to the people: “Look, our city is going to be destroyed. We don’t have the muscle or nerve to fight the King’s army. How is Sheba superior to David? We have a good King. Just for a small tiff we have broken faith with our king and are following this nobody. Think now. The only solution is to cut off the head of Sheba and throw it out. Then we are all safe. Let us have David as our King. He has proved himself.” So the thing was done (2 Sam 20:14-22).
Many times people are foolish. Over a minor trouble they leave God and follow the devil. He will lead them to destruction. God with His army will destroy them one day. A mediator is needed to talk to the people and make peace with God and thus save their souls. We all can be like this wise woman of Abel. God is looking for someone to stand in the gap, plead for the people and stay His anger. We can plead with God to wait; we can go to the people in wisdom and convince them to throw out the devil and accept the Lordship of Christ and thus save their souls from the coming wrath. “She who wins souls is wise” (Prov 11:30). Why? Because that is the nearest thing to the heart of God. God sacrificed His only Son on the cruel cross and redeemed mankind. But mankind is not aware of this. Who except you and me will tell them that there is Jesus who is the way to Heaven? It is our duty.
You may be fearful to talk to people about Christ but you can start small. Start befriending non-Christian women. When an opportunity presents itself assure them of your prayers and start praying in dead earnest. Talk to at least one person a day. That is wisdom. “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever” (Dan 12:3).
