Have I Fallen in Love ?
Reading: Genesis 29:14-20
“Do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” (Eph 5:17)
What happens when a boy falls in love with you? Your dormant emotions are kindled. You are attracted to that boy because he has expressed his love for you. Many girls do not know what to do in that situation. Here are some guidelines —
1. Consider your age: If you are less than twenty, you better not fall in love. You are too young to either decide whom to marry or decide your future. You can just ignore the boy.
2. Consider your education: If you are still in school or college, it is time for you to study and not fall in love. An affair is going to distract you from your studies. Put the thought out of your mind.
3. Consider the boy: If you are past 20 and completed your basic education, then find out if the boy is a good Christian believer from a respectable family with a qualification that will match yours. Do not consider him if he is your cousin or close relative.
4. Consider your emotions: Do you feel repulsive at his advances or attracted towards him? If you have no feeling for him, do not respond to him out of pity or pressure. If you like him, still you must wait for some more time.
5. Consider your parents: Will your parents be happy for you to marry this boy? Before getting involved, discuss the matter with your parents. If your parents are willing and your spiritual leaders are happy, then they can proceed in the matter.
Rachel (in those days) was old enough for marriage. Both Jacob and Rachel were shepherds. She was obviously in love with Jacob. Jacob was a boy from a good God-fearing family. Her parents were happy to get them married.
Take the matter to God in prayer till you are obsolutely sure of His will. The feeling that you have fallen in love need not be your guideline. In fact it often misleads.
If an adult believer girl falls in love with a believer boy and if parents break them up and get her married to an unbeliever, whose fault is it? I believe, it will be more pleasing to God if they married than they obeyed their parents.
