“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Gal 5:16)
“Women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz” (Ezek 8:14). Tammuz was a god worshiped in Mesopotamia, Syria and Palestine. It was a custom of women to mourn for him. That being observed by Israelite women at the very gate of the temple of the true God, seemed to the prophet one of the most abominable idolatries.
Women are easy weepers, many times for the wrong reasons which can be their idols. We can become our own idols. We love us so much that when we are hurt we weep. When our ego takes a beating we cry. When we don’t get what we want we shed tears.
Tears are good but we must know how to use them. They should not be used to manipulate people or get what we want. I was a very touchy person. My parents feared to chide me for fear I would start weeping. After marriage my husband and mother-in-law had a tough time with me. When hurt, I would cry and go into hiber- nation for two or three days. It would take so much for my husband to coax me and make me talk again. But God dealt with me and showed me it was pride. I took years to come out of this sin.
Women should learn to take things easy and not cry and weep and make a racket over silly things. The mixed multitude among the Israelites (women included) yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the leeks, the onions and the garlic; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes” (Num 11:4,34; 14:1). The Israelites followed the ungodly among them and fell in sin by craving for food. We know what happened. The Lord killed those who yielded to craving. Women ought to be extremely careful in money matters, dress, food, etc, not to yield to craving and trying to arm-twist parents or husbands by their tears to get what they want. “Is the Lord’s arm too short?” (Num 11:23). Be cheerful. God will give you what you need.
We need to adjust under new circumstances and have faith when God leads us in new paths. A servant of God was destroyed by a woman’s tears (Judg 14:16,17). So use your tears carefully. Tears are Go d’s gift and must be used for constructive purposes. When tears well up in your eyes, think for a moment if it is for any of your idols.
