“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’
She turned and said to Him, ‘Rabboni!’ ” (Jn 20:16)
Before calling Mary Magdalene by name, Jesus talked to her calling her ‘woman.’ She thought it was the gardener. But when Jesus called her by name she knew it was her Lord. People call me ‘Doctor’ or ‘Madam,’ but my dear and near ones call me by my pet name, ‘Shanthi.’ It shows the intimacy. Occasionally I hear God calling me by this name, usually in the early morning to pray. O, how exciting it is!
“He calls His own sheep by name ... they know His voice” (Jn
10:3,4). Jesus appeared to many women on the resurrection morn but He called only Mary by her name. That shows she was His special friend. God is not partial. All of us can become His special friends. Jesus had twelve apostles and of the twelve only three were in His close circle. And of the three only John dared to be leaning on His bosom.
I suppose, of the two who walked with Jesus to Emmaus, one was a woman because they entered the same home. Like her, if we are walking with Jesus every day, we will get closer and closer to Him. Before seeing Him and talking to Him and knowing Him after resurrection, Mary was weeping. But after her eyes were opened and after she heard His voice there was no more weeping. It was all joy, joy, joy!
We want our moustache and our porridge too! We tightly fill up our day with schedules and then complain that we don’t have time to spend time with the Bible. If you don’t have time to talk to God or hear God, then how can you become His special friend? Jesus may appear dead to you. Where is He? Can you see Him or talk to Him? You must have a live relationship with Him. Sit with your Bible and ask Him to touch your eyes that you may see Him in the pages, and touch your ears that you may hear His voice from the pages of the Bible. Meditate each word till scales fall off your eyes. Exercise your brain under the anointing of the Holy Spirit that God may teach you from the page you are meditating. You will come close and closer and closest to Him.
Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before!
