Reading: Romans 13:8-10
“Love does no harm to a neighbour” (Rom 13:10)
Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am disgusted with life because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living” (Gen 27:46). Isaac and Rebekah had a reasonably peaceful life till their sons got married. When daughters-in-law entered the family, life became miserable for them, especially for Rebekah. We can either bring peace and joy to someone or make life horrible for them. Naomi’s daughters-in-law were also non- Jewish but they seem to have smoothly gelled with the family.
How can we make life loathsome for someone?
Constant criticism is a joy-killer. Knowingly or unknowingly we kill the cheerful spirit of our friends by caustic criticisms. It may be an honest comment about someone’s appearance, cooking, behaviour or accomplishment. However gently it is said, criticism is a joy-killer. If it is done repeatedly and harshly, life becomes dreary for the friend.
Lack of appreciation is another arrow that shoots through the heart. Be it your friend or child or spouse or anyone. A word of appreciation is tonic to their soul. Especially if you stop criticism and start commending, your relationship becomes closer and stronger.
One more character that depresses others is a lack of joyful conversation. Not all are gregarious. Naturally bubbly people lift up the spirit of others; but those quiet, shy and moody personalities should try their level best to put up a cheerful front for the sake of family and friends. I am a naturally moody person. So I take efforts to share jokes, laugh and contribute to conversation. I even write down some news to share during meals, so that I will not lack stuff.
It is the right of everyone, to lead a happy and joyful life. We should not act as spoil-sports. Rather, we should do our best to light up a person’s life, so that our loved ones will be happy to be around us. After all we live only once and let that life bring cheer to others and not misery.
