“Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to expose Mary to public disgrace, had in mind to put her away secretly” (Mt 1:19). Breaking of engagement was allowed even during Biblical times. In fact, the very purpose of engagement is to give time for the candidates to make sure that they want to go ahead with the marriage. In case they find anything worthy of breaking the engagement, they can do so, without guilt. A broken engage-ment is better than a divorce.
Especially in countries like India where the boy and girl are not allowed to go out together before marriage, it is hard for either to know about the other. So it is better to have an engagement 3- 6 months prior to marriage. During this period they can meet each other or exchange emails. They can share their views on life and other things.
Normally an engagement smoothly sails into marriage. But by chance if you come to know something undesirable in the boy, you can always break the engagement. Even though it may be a traumatic experience, if your point is strong, then you should not hesitate. Others may put pressure on you quoting the amount spent or people’s gossip. Do not give in to pressure. They may also say that you can change him after marriage. It is a big risk. A broken engagement is any day better than a miserable life.
Things like drinking habit, another lover, marrying you just for the parents’ sake, pressurizing you for sex, demands of money are all danger signals.
Because of the fragile nature of engagement you must be cautious of having physical relationship. The more intimacy you have, the more guilt you will carry all your life. You may be emotionally involved and find it hard to break up. But you will recover in due course.
Before marriage make sure that you would love to live with him for a lifetime. Then stick to him for life.
