Edify, Exhort, Comfort!
Reading: 1 Corinthians 14:1-5
“In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy ... Even on My servants, both men and women, I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy” (Acts 2:17,18)
If you believe you are living in the last days and if you believe you have the Spirit of God then God expects you to prophesy. The ministry of prophecy is clearly defined in 1 Corinthians 14:1-5.
First of all we need to eagerly desire the gift of prophecy and pray for it. We need to soak ourselves with the Word of God. Then, as and when opportunity presents itself, we need to speak to people to strengthen them in their faith, encourage them and comfort them. When each Christian is thus built up, the Church is edified. A Christian woman should not think the gift of prophecy is only for prophets, forgetting that each believer is a prophet. “Daughters” and “Women” will receive the Spirit and prophesy.
You need not expect the Holy Spirit to descend on you and shake you and make you scream out prophesies. It could be a quiet ministry of counseling. Everywhere we find distraught women in need of counsel, guidance and a word of encouragement from women like Lemuel’s mother (Prov 31:1). Prayerfully help them see from the Word of God how they are precious in God’s sight and how they can walk in the path of God. Boost their faith.
Miriam was a prophetess who led the women in singing, dancing and worship (Ex 15:20). Huldah was a quiet housewife who was helping people. That’s how her name came up when the king needed guidance. She was not afraid to speak forthrightly the word God gave her. That led the nation to its knees. A great revival broke forth (2 Ki 22:14-20). Never be scared to exhort.
Mrs. Isaiah was a quiet counselor helping women build up their relationship with God. They were a strong husband-wife team (Isa 8:3). Deborah led the people in battle and taught them God’s Word (Jud 4:4). Anna spoke to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem (Lk 2:36-38). Philip’s young unmarried daughters were thus ministering to youth (Acts 21:9).
Be careful not to misguide people putting fear in their hearts like Noadiah (Neh 6:14) or Jezebel (Rev 2:20). Anyone who comes to you must go stengthened, edified and comforted.
