Is the baby leaping?
Reading: Luke 1:39-45
“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit” (Lk 1:41)
Elizabeth was six months pregnant at that time. We know a six months foetus will be moving around and kicking in the womb. But Elizabeth was able to differentiate between the usual move-ments and the unusual kick. She also experienced the filling of the Holy Spirit. She knew that her baby jumped out of joy; that the unborn baby was celebrating the announcement. The moment she heard the greetings of Mary, she knew it was no ordinary moment. She recognized the supernatural element in it.
When God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit, it is always not a supernatural experience. It is through our thoughts that He influences us. When Joseph was trying to figure a way out, the angel spoke to him in a dream to accept Mary. He instantly knew it was no confused dream but God’s guidance (Mt 1:20,21). In many matters when we are at the crossroads trying to discern the will of God, our thoughts get muddled. But when we sincerely commit the matter to God in prayer, the muddle will clear and God’s voice will be decipherable. We must be able to discern between our own thoughts and God’s guiding voice. If you are not clear, wait. Be guided by the Word of God. The Spirit of God will never contradict the Word of God. If you are thorough with the Word of God your thoughts will fall in place and you will have no confusion.
God may give us a confirmation too. God had told Jeremiah to buy his cousin’s field. Some time later, his cousin came to Jeremiah requesting him to buy his field. Then Jeremiah knew it was the word of the Lord. He was a prophet; but still when there was a stirring in his heart to buy his cousin’s field, he was not very sure. But when his cousin came with the request, things were clear to Jeremiah. Even a prophet like Jeremiah was not 100% sure of God’s stirring in his heart, whether it was his own thoughts or God’s voice (Jer 32:6-8).
“Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; meat is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong” (Heb 5:13). Learn to discern God’s will as you grow up in Him, to discern your own thoughts and God’s promptings. As Paul says, “Do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” (Eph 5:17).
